Psychometrics

What exactly is a psychometric test?

A psychometric test (or more formally known as a psychometric assessment) is a standardised psychological measuring tool used to determine the relevant strengths and weaknesses of an individual. More specifically, psychometric assessments are used to measure knowledge, aptitude, abilities, personality traits, personal values, integrity and emotional intelligence.

Psychometric tests are widely used by companies as an aid in the recruitment process and are particularly useful to employers due to the fact that these tests have been proven to be directly related to real-world outcomes such as competence, job performance, and trainability. Tests such as these therefore give employers valuable insights into a candidate’s potential job performance, helping them make the ultimate decision of whether they are going to employ the candidate or not.  In a career testing context, these tests/assessments work by recording a candidate’s responses to a specific set of questions that are scientifically developed to measure the psychological construct of the candidate, including their cognitive ability, skills, values and/or personality traits.

In addition to their value in recruitment decisions, these tests are frequently used to facilitate informed decision making in subject choice decisions for scholars making educational and academic decisions.

Executive Assessments

There are psychometric tests that tap into the leadership capabilities and potential of candidates. Psychometric tests are therefore not only useful for recruiting entry level employees, they can be successfully used as a tool for deciding whether or not to recruit or promote a senior staff member such as a manager, director or even a chief executive officer (CEO).

Psychometric tests or assessments can also be used as a part of senior management development. In such cases, these tests are used to investigate the dynamics of a board, for example. Companies often make use of psychometric tests in order to make sure they put their personal development and coaching resources into the employee that holds real talent, i.e. the employee who has the right skills and qualities for the position. In this way, companies can successfully develop their leadership levels.

The Executive Assessment Test Battery that Christelle Robertson employs consists of a number of psychometric assessments selected with the leadership development of the company in mind. In essence, these tests are a vital instrument that help a company when they are considering placement or development of the key individuals within their team.

Self Development & Career Assesments

Psychometrics can make individuals aware of their intrinsic personality profile so that they can identify areas for development and enhance the likelihood of success.

These assessments can assist an individual in their career change and development. This means they can apply their strengths, behavioural preferences and competencies optimally. Career assessments also help the individual to increase their self awareness and understanding of their ideal career environment. They learn to understand their own values, skills, aptitudes and  interests to determine where they best fit within the company or job market.
